COMPLETION DATE:

DETAILS:
Jade will upgrade from Compute Node Linux (CNL) 2.0 to the latest version, Cray CLE 2.2.
IMPACT ON USERS:
The /work directory on Jade will be scrubbed. The upgrade requires a change in the version of Lustre libraries that will require Jade's work directory to be reformatted.
All codes will need to be recompiled after the system has returned to service.
SUGGESTIONS TO USERS:
Users are encouraged to back up any required files to DMS well in advance of November 16.
Users planning to save the files from their work directory on Jade to DMS (Gold) before November 16th and then pull their files back to Jade after the upgrade can greatly help ease network congestion by using the $ARCHIVE_LOCAL in their "archive put" and "archive get" (or msfput and msfget) commands. Using this directory instead of your default archive directory will prevent DMS from sending a second copy of your files to the Disaster Recovery Site. Files sent to $ARCHIVE_LOCAL need to be retrieved before December 30, after which they will be deleted from DMS.
Users should tar up their files because storage/retrieval of one large file has much better performance than many small files. However, tarballs should ideally be less than 200 GBytes to prevent tape spanning and improve file transfer reliability.
Example for putting files into your SCRATCH directory on DMS:
% archive put -C $ARCHIVE_LOCAL tar_ball.tar
or
% msfput tar_ball.tar $ARCHIVE_LOCAL/tar_ball.tar
